Q. When is the best time to get an aeration in Colorado Springs?
A. Spring and/or fall, depending on when you had an aeration done last year. Spring aeration’s alleviate compaction and stimulate air movement for the summer. Fall aerations allow what little moisture we do receive get into the root zone and reduce winter desiccation. Both spring and fall aeration’s allow vital nutrients, air, and water to penetrate the soil.
Q. How close do you get to the perimeter?
A. 6-8 inches, our machines don’t allow us to get much closer.
Q. How often should I aerate?
A. Colorado’s clay soils make it so aeration is necessary at least once a year and twice a year for a lawn with heavy traffic or poor soil quality.
Q. Can I get an aeration done in the summer?
A. Yes Aeration helps by breaking up compaction. We recommend an application of our Revive soil conditioner to get the lawn looking great.
Q. Why should I water before the aeration?
A. You should water the night before or early the morning of the application for about 30 minutes so the soil will be moist and the aerator will pull deeper plugs. Moist soil will allow the tines of the aerator to penetrate the soil easier and therefore the plugs will be longer.
Q. Will the aerator hit my sprinkler lines?
A. Properly installed sprinkler lines should be 9 inches below the surface. In the best conditions, the tines on the aerator penetrate the soil 3 inches deep. If the aerator hits an underground sprinkler line we do not guarantee sprinkler line damage.
Q. My sprinkler line was punctured, what are you going to do about it?
A. Properly installed sprinkler lines should be 9 inches below the surface. You will need to contact the company who installed the sprinkler lines to repair the lines. We do not guarantee sprinkler line damage.
Q. Which sprinkler heads do I need to mark?
A. The sprinkler heads in the middle of the lawn need to be marked. You do not need to mark the heads that are within six inches of the perimeter. If a sprinkler head that is more than 6 inches from the perimeter is hit and hasn’t been marked we will not replace the broken head.
Q. What should I use to mark my sprinkler heads?
A. The best thing to use is a flag, but if you do not have any you can use anything visible like sticks, large rocks, plastic fork or anything noticeable.
Q. How deep are the holes for aeration?
A. 1-3 inches depending on the compaction level of your lawn. We recommend watering the lawn at 3 days before and the morning of the service for about thirty minutes. A moist lawn will get deeper plugs compared to a dry lawn. A regularly aerated lawn will get deeper plugs than a compacted lawn.
Q. What do I do with the plugs and how long until they go away?
A. Leave the plugs on the lawn. The plugs will break down by themselves in about two weeks in the spring and four weeks in the fall. This dirt is filled with nutrients and beneficial microorganisms that your lawn will enjoy.
Q. How long should I wait after putting new sod down before aerating?
A. Wait one full year. If the sod has taken well, then we can aerate sooner.
